Hi,

Thanks for your note. Do you know that all interface translation is done now on Betawiki, so that it is available to all uses on all projects. It should never be done on an individual project any more.

I've recruited a few contributors and should have 4 more next week.

Invitation

As an Administrator, you are allowed into #wikimedia-admin, the cross-wiki coordination channel for Wikimedia administrators. Any member of the channel can invite you in temporarily, but you need an invite exemption from a channel operator to get in whenever you want. Please come to #wikimedia and ask for an invite.

Any admin from any project is welcome and it is a good place for cross-wiki coordination of vandal and spam fighting. It is also useful for new admins to contact more experienced admins in real-time to get help with the more complicated admin tasks such as history merges/splits and importing via Special:Import.

Please remember to translate the interface at betawiki: only and to upload images preferably at commons:

Thank you

Best regards, --ndege (:> )=| 07:22, 31 Mei 2008 (UTC)Reply

Problem with language templates

Some templates for language names include a category link to place tagged pages into the relevant category (as does Template:en) and some don't (Template:ar). The problem is, the same set of templates are being used in both section headings (where the category link is appropriate) and in lists of translations (where it is not), resulting in cases like mbili appearing in Jamii:Maneno ya Kiingereza even though it is not an English word. There are a couple of possible solutions to this problem, but they will both require quite a bit of work to implement them fully across all 40,000+ entries on this wiki. One approach is to create a new set of templates for use in only section headings, which contain the category links. These can use MediaWiki's already-existing "knowledge" of language names as written in other languages. So, for example, Template:-en- could be created containing

{{#language:en|sw}}[[Jamii:Maneno ya {{#language:en|sw}}]]

(note: {{#language:en|sw}} = Kiingereza, whereas {{#language:sw|en}} = Swahili). The "old" template calls could be converted to the new names in all of the section headings in entries where the old templates currently appear, keeping the old template names only in the lists of translations. Then the category links could be removed from the old templates. Alternatively, just two new templates could be created, one for use in section headings and one in lists of translations. These could both use the {{#language:}}parser function call and take the language code as input — e.g., say, {{-|en}} and {{fas|en}}, respectively, or whatever naming seems appropriate. In this approach, all the existing calls to the old template names would have to be converted to the new system. Opinions? - dcljr (majadiliano) 04:27, 24 Oktoba 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Dcljr Howdy? I was thinking the same. Do you think it's doable? Please try to fix it. I agree with you we should change either the section header or tafsiri section. One will save the the problem of showing non-needed word to a particularly language. Muddyb (majadiliano) 14:26, 24 Oktoba 2025 (UTC)Reply
We can get help from a bot to implement whichever solution seems best. We just have to nail down what changes we want the bot to make. I would say the two-new-templates approach using, say, {{-|…}} and {{tafs|…}} (or whatever), would be best, since that leverages MediaWiki's {{#language:}} feature more efficiently. On the other hand, keeping the old templates like Kigezo:en around because people are used to using them seems like a good idea, as well (although eventually they will need the category links removed from them). I've already created Kigezo:- as the header template. This edit shows how it would be used in entries. If you want to move it to, say, Kigezo:-- or some other name (since {{-}} is used on many other wikis for a totally different purpose), then go ahead and do that. (I'm watching all the things I've linked to, so I can see what you're doing to them.) By the way, I guessed based on Google Translate that the category for templates should be Jamii:Violezo. Is that right? Or is there already a different category for templates? I've also created Kigezo:tafs (example). You can move that to a better name, too, if you wish. - dcljr (majadiliano) 02:56, 25 Oktoba 2025 (UTC)Reply
I see there is also Template:t, as used at, say, mweka hazina. - dcljr (majadiliano) 03:20, 25 Oktoba 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Dcljr I’m fully on board with every step you’ve taken to improve the Kiswahili Wikamusi — excellent work. Just to clarify, the correct localized term for “templates” is vigezo, not violezo, so the category should be Jamii:Vigezo for consistency with our terminology.
Also, if we decide to scale this implementation across entries — whether updating translation templates or adjusting headers — we can definitely consider using AutoWikiBrowser or any other semi-automated bot to streamline the process. That would make the transition much more efficient and reduce manual workload Muddyb (majadiliano) 07:11, 25 Oktoba 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the encouragement. I've decided that Template:- really should be moved to Template:--, since the name I originally used is used on so many wikis to push text down below floated elements (usually images). Someone might want to create that same template someday here on this wiki. (Plus, you could think of the two hyphens as being analogous to the equals signs on both sides of the section heading — i.e., "--|en" ≈ "-en-" ≈ "==en==". Or perhaps "--|en" ≈ "--en--" ≈ "==en==".) - dcljr (majadiliano) 09:32, 25 Oktoba 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Dcljr Thank you for all of that. Now I;m waiting for any better suggestion on how to change the whole 40K entries if not all of them into new suggested way. Muddyb (majadiliano) 11:39, 25 Oktoba 2025 (UTC)Reply
